Hints for Using NLP to Make Productive Changes
Monday, October 31st, 2011Neuro linguistic programming, also known as NLP, can be exercised for a lot of different contentions and troubles. While you can spend years learning about this technique, you can reap a lot of rewards from it by learning some easy movements. NLP works by making alterations in the way you speak to yourself or others, and how you see events and memories in your mind’s eye. This article will allow you to have some common ideas about how NLP can be of assistance to you, no matter what your specific ambitions may be.
One method NLP uses to help you have a better understanding of yourself and to help you make alterations to your life is to show you why you often hold onto issues. People are often reluctant to let go of habits and problems because of what are called secondary gains. Secondary gains are hidden reasons why we do certain things that, on the surface, seem negative or illogical. As an example, people who are always ending up in accidents benefit from secondary gains when they get hurt, because they usually get sympathy from someone and often get time off work. Habitually, we aren’t even deliberately attentive of these drives, although NLP will assist us in becoming familiar with them so we can change our lives.
One simple neuro linguistic concept that is used to change the way we look at things is called reframing. We each have many beliefs that tend to limit us, overall, and changing how we view something, like a personal attribute for example, is what occurs with reframing. It’s a process that takes time to fully realize the effects, but basically it allows a person to begin healing from what is usually a painful belief. Reframing can be used to have an effect on the way people view something, and is used a lot in sales and even by politicians. For example, if one of the candidates running for office is quite a bit older than the other, both sides will try to frame this to their advantage. When age is the issue, one side will say it’s too great of an age, and the other will say there is wisdom and experience in age.
Another well-known technique within NLP is the strategy of modeling, and that is an approach people have used successfully over the years. The way it works is to locate a person who has already achieved success in a goal that is similar to yours. Regardless of who the person is, present or past, you can effectively model yourself after that person. Then, ask yourself how they did it, and then find out how they did it. You will have an easier time, maybe, if your choice is a famous, sort of, person only because there will be information available. When you do modeling, you pay attention to everything about the person, including their body language, how they walk and the kind of language they use. The idea is to use them as a blueprint, or a guide because they have achieved what you want to achieve.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is not just one strategy, but rather it’s a collection of principles that are applied to different situations in a person’s life. NLP is not something that gives instant results, but it does seem to be able to allow people to make positive changes in a fairly shorter period of time. You can learn much more about NLP, and of course you can find people who are trained and licensed to help others using NLP techniques.
